An Exploration of the Journey of Kellogg's Cereals– From the Field to Your Family Breakfast Table
As part of its mission to encourage families in the Middle East to be discerning with their children’s food choices,Kellogg’s is shedding unprecedented light on the natural origins of its breakfast cereals
Cereal giant Kellogg’s has long recognized that parents – especially mothers–across the Middle East want to fully understandthe journey of their family’s food, before it ever reaches their kitchen table. After all, for mothers, nourishing their family with delicious, wholesome food is an act of love – they do it with real passion, to support their children’s healthy development, and in the hope of creating lasting, treasured memories that will linger for a lifetime. And so, to further ensure that their efforts are not in vain, mothers are often willing to go the extra mile to feed their childrenwell-balanced meals that pack a nutritional punch.
In line with this, Kellogg’s, a leading producer of breakfast foods, wants to empower mothers in the region to continue to make informed decisions for their family. How?By providing them with insightful information about the natural origins of its cereals and their journey –all the way from seed to spoon.
“At Kellogg’s, we believe that knowledge about our food origins and its nutritional value is of vital importance,”said Kellogg’s Nutritionist Anne-Sophie Bourhis. “Mothers in the Middle East take immense pride and delight in preparing tasty, healthy, and wholesome food for their family. Ourobjective is to help reinforce that feeling byequipping them with the knowledge needed to make the right choices when it comes to their children’s food. Now, they can take comfort knowing that our breakfast foods start with a simple grain and evolve into cereals via simple grains rooted in the goodness of nature.”
The fact is, the story of Kellogg’s cereals begins in a field with a single grain of corn, wheat, oat or rice, and continues right through to the family breakfast table. The journey starts with dedicated farmers who grow these grains in the span of approximately six to ten months. They basically plough the fields and plant the seeds thenwait for the first sprouts to appear and turn into crops.Interestingly, it can take 1,000 hours of sunshine to grow a single grain for Kellogg. From there comes a cooking process that takes less than two hours. Depending on the cereal that is being made, the grains are either shredded, puffed or flaked. Next, they are toasted, mixed with other cooking ingredients and enriched by a variety of minerals and vitamins. Finally, everything is packaged so you and your family can enjoy a delicious breakfast meal!
All in all, theresult of this multi-phased journey is a breakfast option thatcan help deliver a slew of nutritional benefits essential to the overall health and well-being of children and adults alike.
Abowl of Kellogg’s Corn Flakes or Coco Popscereal, for example, provides at least 20% of theNutrient Reference Value (NRV) for 6B vitamins (thiamin (B1), riboflavin (B2), niacin (B3), vitamin B6, vitamin B12, folic acid), and at least 15% of the NRV for iron. Many cereals also contain 25% of the NRV for Vitamin D per bowl! Vitamin D promotes calcium absorption and is essential to developing and maintaining strong bones. Iron and folic acid are important nutrients as they help to reduce tiredness and fatigue. So are vitamins B1, B2, B3, B6 and B12, which help to deliver energy by releasing it from the food we eat.
