Is TV Making a Comeback Despite the Popularity of Digital Platforms?
TV offers advantages that give it an edge over the streaming services
Jeddah: On the occasion of World Television Day, marked each year on November 21st, W7Worldwide — an award-winning independent marketing communications consultancy agency in the region — released a short video clip to understand the continued popularity of TV despite the emergence of and increasing demand for modern digital broadcasting platforms such as Netflix, Shahid, Amazon Prime and others. The changing dynamics of media and entertainment channels have set in motion a debate on the existence and future of the television era that has kept nearly the whole world glued to its screens for decades. The advent of new-age streaming platforms like Netflix, Shahid, Amazon Prime and others has only fueled this debate. Due to their growing strength of popularity and the number of subscribers, much is being talked about the possibility of these platforms pulling the rug from TV screens.
W7Worldwide’s 44-second video clip compared, in a creative manner, the TV and viewing platforms in terms of their advantages and disadvantages, raising the question if it was time for the return of television.
The video reviews the advantages of TV that are dangerously missing in modern streaming platforms. For instance, the content on television continues to be monitored by the state authorities for the sake of the interests of family and children. The streaming platforms, on the other hand, have no such restraints, thus allowing viewers to watch content that may be of hostile and unpleasant nature, causing unassailable harm to the health of society and its future. Besides, we often find fresh and lively shows, soap operas, children’s programs and first-hand talk shows on television, which the streaming platforms utterly lack in.
The video urges viewers to answer as to what is more appropriate for them and their family: Viewing television or streaming platforms?
The UN General Assembly declared November 21 in 1996 as World Television Day after it held the first World Television Forum on November 21-22, inviting leading media figures to discuss the growing significance of television in the rapidly changing world and how they can enhance their mutual cooperation.
The world has since been observing this occasion every year, thus acknowledging television as a vital tool to inform, channel, and influence public opinion, having an indomitable presence and influence on global affairs.
The day is observed not to celebrate the TV medium per se but to mark it as a symbol of communication and globalization in the contemporary world that it represents.
