Inspiring Kuwait’s residents to adopt responsible consumption and environmental practices

Kuwait City, Kuwait – 6 October 2019:  Playing its role in the conservation of Kuwait’s environment and natural resources, Sheikh Abdullah Al Salem Cultural Centre has partnered with Basurama’, a creative linking platform to design art installations using discarded water bottles. Demonstrating Kuwait’s as well as international rising concerns over climate change and its effect on water consumption,  the event aims to raise awareness about plastic waste and its effects on the health of the environment.

As Kuwait's iconic cultural centre which houses a Natural History Museum, Science and Technology Museum, Arabic Islamic Science Centre, and Space Museum, as well as a Fine Arts Centre and Theatre, Sheikh Abdullah Al Salem Cultural Centre symbolises the importance of preservation. The workshop intends to communicate a pressing message about responsible production and consumption and instill best practices as part of the country’s Sustainable Development Goals.

A collaboration between The Fine Arts Centre and Basurama Organization, engaged local participants through art making workshops and an artistic installation “Only Geology Lasts”. The installation is reusing more than 15,000 expired water bottles collected from within the Sheikh Abdullah Al Salem Cultural Centre premises to create a dystopic landscape to walk through, a reflection of a possible future in which the environment as we know it will have completely changed and we will promenade between plastic geographies and salt crystals lakes.

The exhibition is open for visitors from October 3rd to 16th of November.

Established in Madrid in 2001, Basurama is an artist collective dedicated to research, cultural and environmental creation and production, whose practice revolves around the reflection of trash, waste and reuse in all its formats and possible meanings. Basurama has created more than 150 all over the world.

Sheikh Abdullah Al Salem Cultural Centre is one the many projects developed by the Amiri Diwan to facilitate the exchange of knowledge and promote critical, creative, and interpretive thinking within Kuwaiti society through world-class exhibitions and educational public programmes.
